‘A Modest Proposal’ an exhibition at Hauser & Wirth

Hauser & Wirth at their 18th Street showroom in Chelsea gives us a pretty refreshing exhibition: 14 artworks remind visitors that this summer you can find a place where there is something more about the body than selling sunscreen and swimming suits.

This great exhibit features artworks by Lucas Blalock, Naotaka Hiro, Sanya Kantarovsky, Nicola L, Tala Madani and Jakub Julian Ziolkowski, who in the words of the gallery: “humorously critique our relationship with bodily and abject”. The exhibition takes its title from Jonathan Swith's satirical essay. Their reflections focus on the “confrontation between self and the external world”, “critique of our relationship with one another”, and present “shapes of bodies in the repetition of a cycle, a closed loop from which there is no exit”.

The exhibition offers an intriguing variety of media (painting, sculpture, prints, furniture, animation etc.) that embody the artist's vision. Among these contemporary artworks representing heads, feet, arms and fingers, the 68’ body canvases of Nicola L. have not aged.
